Bring Autumn Into Your Home With These 5 Design Ideas

That first brisk snap of autumn is in the air! While the trees outside are beginning to put on their fall wardrobes, we can't wait to bring the cozy colors and scents of autumn inside as well. Here are five great ways to bring autumn style to your home:

Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

Indoor/Outdoor Rugs are a great choice for rooms inside your home that get a lot of wear and activity, such as a kitchen, a hallway or a sunroom. You don't have to worry about spilled cider, as they are stain and spill resistant and cleanup is easy. When decorating for fall choose bright, bold colors such as reds, golds and rich chocolate browns. Use multiple rugs in a variety of colors to bring the cozy feeling inside. Don't forget complimentary colors... Teal blue creates a gorgeous pop of color when combined with orange.

Throw Pillows

Who can afford a new furniture for each season? Nobody! But you can change the look of a room by adding throw pillows in bright colors to the sofas and chairs you already have. Bright fall colors and fall prints are available in a variety of styles, sizes and textures. Mix and match multiple textures and colors to add depth to your room. Hot tip: Save even more money when you purchase a fall pillow cover from Amazon and use your own pillow insert. When fall turns to winter, simply store the fall pillow cover and use the insert again with a Christmas pillow cover.

Scents

Nothing brings memories of Trick-or-Treating and family Thanksgiving more than the scents of cinnamon and apple. You can make an easy fall decoration that smells wonderful by gathering pine cones in a basket or decorative bowl. Add fresh cinnamon sticks, dried apples and a few drops of citrus essential oil for a decoration that looks like autumn and smells like fresh-baked pie and spicy cider.

Candles

The flickering flame of a candle brings warmth and light to any room. Fall candles are easy to make, and easy to customize for your decorating style. This Cinnamon Spiced Candle uses just 5 ingredients: A wick, soy wax flakes, vanilla, cinnamon and cloves. Melt the wax in the microwave in one-minute segments, checking the wax each minute. Add cinnamon, cloves, vanilla (or whatever scent you love) and stir. Place the wick in a Mason jar, then carefully pour the hot wax into the jar. Be sure not to cover the top of the wick. As the wax cools, the spices will create a unique pattern that will add to the custom look of your candle. You can then personalize the candle with a bright ribbon, jute or raffia tied around the top of the jar.

Stained Glass Window Craft

Kids love to help with decorating, and creating stained glass windows with fall leaves is a simple and elegant way to decorate windows with autumn color. Let children gather fall leaves in a variety of colors and shapes. Cut clear Contact paper (sticky back paper) in shapes to fit your window panes, then let your little ones press the leaves, front side down, on the Contact paper. Press the sticky side of the Contact paper to your window panes, and let the sun shine through your colorful "stained glass."
