Summer Sunroom Fun: An Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration

The 4th of July is a fantastic opportunity for friends and family to gather together. And because it is summertime, what could be better than an outdoor party? Your sunroom provides an essential component of the perfect backyard celebration.

  •  Even though your guest may eat and mingle in your backyard, set up the food table and paper goods inside your sunroom. Having the food table in the sunroom means there is easy access both to a kitchen area as well as the yard, but it also provides some protection from direct sunlight, wind, or bugs that may want to join your party.
  •  Your sunroom can become a unique expression of the holiday. Do you want a "small-town" feel for your 4th of July party? Use galvanized tin buckets or wooden crates to hold paper goods and utensils. Decorate the table with red, white and blue bandannas, and put tea lights or candles in Mason jars as evening approaches. Decorate the sunroom windows with banners or pennants made from scraps of vintage fabric.

  •  Provide a large basket of blankets or throws that guests can use to sit on to watch the nighttime fireworks display, or to wrap around their shoulders if the night air turns cool.
  •  Add to your home-style celebration with homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors. You can choose strawberry, blueberry and vanilla to celebrate the season! Place scoops into small cups and top them with patriotic sprinkles or a small flag on a toothpick. Keep ice cream cool by placing the individual cups in mounds of crushed ice in a large bucket or cooler. Be sure to put the bucket in the shade or keep it in the sunroom to avoid melting.
  •  After dinner, set up the sunroom with craft and activity stations to keep your smaller guests happy until it is dark enough for fireworks. Crafts can be as simple as making homemade sparklers from dowel rods and sparkly pipe cleaners to noise makers made from tin cans or paper plates. These projects will not only add to your hometown celebration theme, but will also give each child a special gift to take home to remember the day!
